Greetings and Salutations

Welcome to the Carleton Class of '81 website!

Less than ONE year until our next reunion JUNE 16-19, 2011, so stay tuned for periodic updates and happenings with the Class of '81.  The Reunion planning weekend is taking place this weekend, August 20-21, so stay tuned for more news. But real quick - did you know the college now has several digital collections online including all of the Zoo Books?  Check out our 1977 New Students Zoo Book here.

8/21/10:  A Request for all Members of the Class of '81:

We would like everyone in the Class of '81 to complete a brief survey to help us plan for the 30th Reunion next summer.  Please take a minute to answer the five short questions on this survey:  http://tinyurl.com/carleton1981

Also, we have created a Facebook group titled "Carleton Class of 1981".  It is a "closed" group which requires you to request to join.  Here's a link to the group:  http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121769764539185&ref=ts

-----------------------------------

If this is your first time here, please take some time to skim, surf, or plod through each page on our site.  There is lots of information about our class and about our 25th Reunion that was held in June, 2006, links to various Carleton stuff, and even opportunities for you to contribute to the website.  So sit back and enjoy.  If you check in here regularly, please feel free to offer ideas or send in any information or contributions that you might like posted.  Just e-mail Jeff Stewart.  And if you have any pics to post here or on our Shutterfly site, just let me know.

Look for a listing of latest updates just below here.....and enjoy your visit to the Class of '81 website!

Latest Updates
  • A log of previous site updates is in the section at the bottom of this page.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

Forward-thinking Carleton invests in renewable energy, and the class of '81 met in June of 2006 to recharge our batteries and reconnect, to celebrate and share the joys and vicissitudes of the past 25 years, and to leave with renewed energy (and hangovers for some) to face the next 25.

We'll try to keep you updated with class of '81 news and future plans on this website.  Surf through the pages here and reminisce, reflect, recall friends and memories, make plans, think of what you'd like to gain or give at our next Reunion in 2011.

If you haven't been to campus for awhile, or haven't kept up with all the college's changes through The Voice or other means, catch up on what's new at Carleton these days by exploring the college's website at www.carleton.edu.  Or catch up on some of Carleton's current news and music interests by logging on to KRLX (which has been named one of the top 10 college radio stations in the country).  Or if you're a blog junkie, you might want to check out the site Planet Carleton to skim through all kinds of Carleton-related blogs.

The Carleton College Class of 1981 Reunion Committee members met in August, 2005 to begin planning our 25th Reunion which took place June 15-18, 2006.  Diversity, music and energy were key topics.  The new wind turbine at Carleton was an inspiration to those in attendance...  A desire grew, not just to celebrate, not just to donate, but to make a difference - to leave some lasting impact - like we all wanted to do when we were together twenty-five years ago......

Think you can identify everyone in this picture that attended the August 2005 planning weekend?  Or do you think you can identify where the pic was taken?  Answers are at the bottom of the Reunion page here.
Log of previous site updates
  • 4/7/08:  After a long respite, the Class of '81 website is back up and running.  Our next reunion is only three years away, and we get to start planning for it in a little over two years, so stay tuned for updates to the website.
  • 05/05/07:  The Class of 1982 now has their own Bio Book and they have 84 profiles out there. Reunion 2007 is only a month away!  Catch up with friends from the Class of '82 through their Bio Book, and maybe even consider attending the reunion to see some of them.  (Our own 1981 Bio Book with 58 profiles is still out there.  Existing profiles can be edited, but I don't think you can still add new ones.)
  • 1/20/07:  Not much new with the Class of '81 that's come to my attention.  If anyone has anything they'd like posted, email me.  For the record, I did add the list of reunion attendees from our class at the bottom of the Reunion page if you want to see who was there.
  • 12/17/06:  The thank you postcard that was sent to everyone who contributed to the class gift includes our class photo from Reunion and some other great Reunion shots.
  • 10/13/06:  Not much happening these days in terms of '81 news that I've been made aware of, but the Class of '82 now has their own Bio Book  up and running in anticipation of Reunion next year.  We were the pioneers, and it's nice to be able to look up our classmates from time to time.  So now if you want to look up any friends from the class of '82, keep checking in to their Bio Book for new profiles.  And while you're there, you might want to update your own profile in our Bio Book (or add one if you've procrastinated and haven't done so already!!)
  • 8/18/06:  Wow.  Another whole album of reunion pics, created by Peter Barnet.  Thanks, Pete!  They're on the same Shutterfly site as listed below, so click and enjoy more reunion memories.
  • 8/2/06:  EVEN MORE REUNION PICS!!  Patti Korn just uploaded 49 more pictures to our class photo site at http://carleton81reunion.shutterfly.com/action/  We have quite a nice selction now between three albums, in addition to all the photos on the main college reuinon site.  Relive the experience, or if you couldn't make it to our 25th, enjoy seeing who was there and who you recognize.  Thanks a bunch, Patti!
  • 7/24/06:  More pics from Reunion, courtesy of Chip Smith, uploaded to our class photo site at http://carleton81reunion.shutterfly.com/action/  Enjoy the pics.  Thanks, Chip!
  • 7/11/06:  Our very own John Youngblood has been elected to a 4-year term on the Carleton Board of Trustees.  John is a managing partner of Gallatin Capital LLC in New York City.  He has a bachelor's degree in religion from Carleton and a master's degree in business management from Northwestern University.  He currently lives in South Kent, Conn.  Congratulations, John!
  • 7/3/06:  Don't you wish Reunion was still going on?  I miss it.  I've been listening to the Knights CD that I bought in the bookstore as a reminder of the good time we had at Reunion, but it's not like being there.  But hey, there's photos online now at our class picture website at http://carleton81reunion.shutterfly.com/action/  Check out the photos already there from some of our class gatherings, or upload your own.  Also, lots more Reunion pics have been added to the College website here.
  • 6/30/06:  Visit the Giving page and find out how we did on our giving totals as of June 30 (Carleton's fiscal year-end).
  • 6/27/06:  I've been back from Reunion for over a week and am still missing Carleton.  I've also been out of town on business for a few days, so I haven't gotten to update the website like I've wanted.  But I've been hoping that some of you would submit reflections or inspirational thoughts or just some great stories from Reunion. E-mail them to me at  jstewart@carleton81.com  and I'll get them posted on the Reunion page.
  • 6/20/06:  Reunion photos and comments:
  • Click here and you will be able to view Reunion photos taken by the roving student photographers.  Right now there about 120 photos online and more should be added over the next few days.  If you are looking for just the Class of 1981 photos, try putting "81" in the search field.  It's an imperfect system but still worth checking out.
  • I've also added a couple early Reunion comments from our class on the Reunion page.  Watch soon for a more developed "Reunion Reflections" section.  Contributions are welcome.
  • 6/20/06: Check out my "Reunion Reflections - Part 1" at http://carleton1981.blogspot.com/  Also post your comments, e-mail anything that you'd like posted, or better yet, register as a blog team member so you can be a regular do-it-yourself blogger. This can become one way for our class to easily stay in touch between reunions.
  • 6/18/06: Reunion just ended and it was awesome!  Details will follow soon.
  • As always, feel free to submit any reunion contributions to the website by e-mailing me at jstewart@carleton81.com  Reunion memories, philosophical reflections on coming back to Carleton, any recurring dreams you are now having about Carleton, more reminiscences for our Wellstone legacy page, etc.
  • 6/14: Special exclusive sneak preview of our Reunion logo T-shirts at the bottom of the Reunion page!
  • 6/13: Time is running out before reunion! Please create your online Bio Book profile NOW so everyone can get a little update about you, especially those classmates who truly can't make it to reunion. (Yes, there are some truly more important occasions like one classmate's daughter's first piano recital - I give him credit for making a very tough choice to stay home for that......) But please create your online Bio Book profile so we can know what you've been up to and what you miss about Carleton.
  • 6/10: Some updates have been made to the In Memoriam page. Take a moment before Reunion to read about and remember those classmates of ours who have passed away since graduation.
  • 6/7: Biography pages from the Reunion Convocation program have been added to the Reunion page (about halfway down the page) for our three Alumni Achievement Award winners - David Gramit, Wesley Sundquist and John Scholz.
  • 6/7: Jeff Stewart will be giving a talk and leading discussion at the Saturday morning "Carleton Conversations: intergenerational breakfast discussions" on the topic of "Recovery After Carleton: Overcoming Addiction, Codependency and Family Dysfunction". Join us for breakfast at 8:00 and participate in this or one of the other alumni discussion groups on a variety of topics.
  • 5/31: Our first Class of '81 poll results are in. Thanks for participating. Check out the results on our Class Polls page.
  • Have a look back at our last (20th) reunion group picture at the bottom of the Reunion page. (The image is small and I haven't quite figured out how to make it any bigger on this site without becoming blurred and grainy, but if you were there you should be able to pick yourself out in the crowd.) Let's hope we have an even bigger crowd for the 25th!
  • A few photos from a May Twin Cities-Reunion mini-reunion have been posted on the About Us page. See if you can identify your classmates and then plan to join them in June at our 25th Reunion.
  • A Reunion Schedule of Events has been put together for your convenience highlighting activities for our class. Many more events are on the official schedule, but this might be helpful as a quick reference guide of events geared towards our class.
  • The spring issue of The Voice has an article about the dream job of our classmate Greg Gorden. Click on the link and scroll down to the section about Greg.
  • Personal websites or blogs from anyone in our class can be listed on the About Us page. The first two links are from Drew Miller. Visit his sites http://www.boiledinlead.com and http://www.myspace.com/boiledinlead One of the featured Reunion events on Friday evening will be a performance by his global folk-rock band Boiled in Lead. If you'd like to give them a listen in advance, check out the myspace page, where two songs - "menfi" and "tape decks all over hell" - reflect the band's sound that they'll be putting forth on Friday night. (Links will stay on our site after Reunion for your listening pleasure.)
