Reunion 2007 (Classes of '77 and '82)
|
If you've ever thought about attending an "in-between" reunion, it can be a great experience. The class of '82 is having their 25th Reunion in June, 2007 which would be a good opportunity to catch up with friends from that class. The college considers all reunions open to any alumni. I attended the last class of '82 reunion in 2002 and was made to feel very much at home the whole weekend. If you're interested in attending, just sign up like any reunion attendee. If you stay in the dorms, they'll include you in the dorm of the class closest to ours. Watch for details and schedule at Reunion 2007. Online registration will open up in March as usual. If you want a registration packet mailed to you, just email Amy Goerwitz in the Alumni Affairs office.

Submit any reunion memories, reflections, inspirational moments, or other contributions to me by e-mail at jstewart@carleton81.com. I'll get them posted here or somewhere on the website wherever they fit best.
Comments from Reunion 2006:
- Charlie Pydych: "It was really great. Everyone looked healthy & happy. I only wish it happened more than once every 5 years.
- Patti Korn: "I had such a great time this past weekend. It was so good to see everyone and feel reconnected."
- Susan Quinlan: "Yes, it was wonderful to see everybody and good to be in touch by email as well. I especially like that we are still developing relationships wth people who we may not have spent time with when we were in school.
Thanks, again to those hard working organizers who did such a great job! To anyone who ventures to the Bay Area, please know you have a place to stay in Berkeley."
- Debbie Ponce de Leon: "It sounds like I missed a great time Saturday night. Hearing Carrie and Jim on Friday night had me wanting more. and I wish I could have stayed.

Click here and you will be able to view Reunion photos taken by the roving student photographers. There are over 600 photos online. If you are looking for just the Class of 1981 photos, try putting "81" in the search field. It's an imperfect system but still worth checking out.
I also took an idea from the Class of '91's website and created a Shutterfly site to which you can add any reunion photos you'd like to share. We have contributions from two of you who attended Reunion so far. The site is located at http://carleton81reunion.shutterfly.com I didn't take any pictures myself, but hope that some of you will post the ones you took. Feel free to post any photos that you'd like to add to the album I created, or create a new album in the collection. (To add your pictures to an existing album in the Collection, just click the album name and then click the 'Add your pictures' button. You do have to do the free sign-up with Shutterfly in order to add to the collection, but it's very easy.)
Scroll to the bottom of this page to have a look at our group picture from the 20th in 2001. The group picture from the 25th will be in the upcoming Voice summer special featuring Commencement and Reunion. Or you can click here to see the thank you postcard that was sent to everyone who contributed to the class gift, which includes our class photo from Reunion and some other great Reunion shots.

Class of '81 Alumni Achievement Award Winners
|
We are very pleased to announce that the following three classmates were presented with Alumni Distinguished Achievement Awards at our 25th Reunion in June. CONGRATULATIONS!
Click on the links below to the complete biography pages from the Reunion Convocation Program for our class alumni award winners. Short bios and pictures are also below.
David Gramit, Karl Scholz
Wesley Sundquist
(One of the pages also includes a Class of '91 award winner which we couldn't get detached.)

David Gramit: Professor Gramit teaches musicology at the University of Alberta. His research investigates music and culture of late 18th- and early 19th-century Europe. He was the first recipient of the American Musicological Society's AMS 50 Award, a year's support given to an outstanding graduate student. His first article won the national award for best article by a young scholar in musicology. Carleton professor Larry Archbold writes that Gramit has established himself not just as an important scholar in his field, but as a genuine leader.
|

John Karl Scholz: Professor Scholz teaches economics at the University of Wisconsin--Madison. He is at the cutting edge in earned income tax credit research and is a specialist in economics of poverty. Scholz has served as director of the Institute for Research on Poverty, co-editor of the leading Journal of Human Resources, and Senior Research Affiliate at the Michigan National Poverty Center. Both professors Steve Strand and Scott Bierman use his work in classes at Carleton and cite him as a leader in his field.
|

Wesley Sundquist: Wes Sundquist teaches biochemistry at the University of Utah. His research focuses on unlocking the structural basis of how HIV assembles and escapes from cells (a process called "budding"). He led a team that has been identified and characterized by a key protein that helps HIV escape from cells; without it, HIV cannot spread in the body. His work was cited as one of the five most important research advances in HIV pathogenesis in 2002 by the National Institutes of Health and he received the Amgen Award from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology for significant achievements by a new researcher.

Here is the last Reunion Letter sent out in May by our Publicity Committee co-chairs Debbie Ponce De Leon and Patti Korn. Be sure to thank them at Reunion, if not before, for all their hard work in communicating with our class and promoting attendance.
Last E-Mail (condensed) from the Alumni Office - April 2006
Greetings Class of '81 Alumni,
Visit our comprehensive reunion web site for information about reunion and for secure, online registration: www.carleton.edu/reunion. You'll want to join us for whole weekend. There are a number of important events on Friday that you won't want to miss, including talks by alumni-award-winning classmates, your class photo, the faculty reception, your class reception at Nutting House with President Oden, music by classmates Carrie Gerendasy and Jim Pacala, and a special performance by Boiled in Lead featuring Drew Miller. Bring your family--there are fun activities planned throughout the weekend for both kids and teens.
In addition to registration, the website listed above has a list of your classmates who have already registered, an up-to-date schedule of events, and information on other programs, meals, housing, etc. For class-specific reunion information, go to the 25th reunion website (managed by webmaster Jeff Stewart '81) at www.carleton81.com. Reunion Committee Letter - September 2005 If you didn't receive it, here is the second letter sent out by the Publicity Committee last year.
Reunion Committee Letter - June 2005 And click here if you threw out the first letter sent out by the Publicity Committee last June when our 25th Reunion was but a distant thought....

Reunion Registration has been open since March, but don't keep putting it off! The June 2 deadline is getting closer and closer. Register now so your classmates know who all will be coming, and help us reach our class attendance goal!
The college is posting and updating weekly on the main Reunion web page who has registered from our class. Click on the following link to see who has already registered from our class:
Note: If you have registered and don't see your name posted, it may be because of one of these reasons: 1) You sent in updated contact information which must be added to the system before your name will appear online (delay of 1-2 days), though your reservation has been processed, or 2) You asked for a specific roommate. These reservations are not processed until reservations are received from both roommates.
If you want to register online or find out more details about Reunion 2006, click on Reunion Information to go to Carleton's main Reunion web page. Registration packets have already been mailed out. If you have any questions about Reunion or have not received a registratin packet by mail, send an email to our Alumni Affairs reunion coordinator Amy Goerwitz at amy.goerwitz@carleton.edu.
Click on Reunion Schedule to review what is planned so far for Reunion weekend. Additional events will be added as the date approaches. The final schedule will be included in Reunion packets upon check-in.

Reunion Program Committee
|
Reunion Program Committee Planning Activities Our program committee has been hard at work since the planning weekend on campus last August. Please click on the paragraph heading and take a look at their flyer to see how you can help. Your ideas are welcome!
One of the featured Reunion events on Friday evening will be a performance by Boiled in Lead, which is a global folk-rock band featuring our very own Drew Miller '81. If you'd like to give them a listen in advance, check out Drew's website at http://www.boiledinlead.com and/or http://www.myspace.com/boiledinlead On the myspace page, the two songs "menfi" and "take decks all over hell" reflect the band's sound they'll be putting forth on Friday night.
There will also be informal jam sessions put on by members of our class on both Thursday and Saturday evenings.
Drew is also in charge of compiling background music to play in "Le Cave" during Reunion. Thanks to Amy Goerwitz and an '80 class member, Drew now has a 7-CD set from the class of 1980 that he has ripped to MP3s. This will be our starter list of music to jog your memory about the times we spent on campus. You can review the list of songs on the CD set by going to the "About Us" page.
